Bronn was counting his coins at a table when Tyrion walked in.
Tyrion asked,
“Still counting?”
Bronn didn't look up.
“Still earning.”
Tyrion smiled.
“What would you do if money suddenly became worthless?”
Bronn finally looked up.
“I'd find something else worth fighting for.”
Tyrion raised an eyebrow.
“Such as?”
Bronn thought about it.
“Good food.”
Tyrion laughed.
“That's surprisingly reasonable.”
Bronn shook his head.
“I'm not finished.”
Tyrion waited.
Bronn leaned back.
“There's one other thing.”
“I'm listening.”
Bronn pointed at the coins.
“Enough money to never have to listen to anyone's complaints again.”
Tyrion smiled.
“So your dream is freedom?”
“My dream is expensive freedom.”
Tyrion laughed.
“You really do have standards.”
Bronn picked up another coin.
“Everyone has standards. Mine just happen to have a price.”
Tyrion sat across from him.
“What if someone offered you more than money?”
Bronn narrowed his eyes.
“Depends what they're offering.”
“Loyalty.”
Bronn laughed.
“Loyalty doesn't buy breakfast.”
“Friendship?”
“Sometimes.”
Tyrion smiled.
“And trust?”
Bronn stopped counting.
“Now you're talking about something expensive.”
Tyrion looked surprised.
“You actually value trust?”
Bronn put the coin down.
“Of course.”
“Why?”
Bronn shrugged.
“Because unlike gold, you can't simply replace it when someone spends it.”
Tyrion smiled.
“That's almost profound.”
Bronn picked up his coins again.
“Don't spread that around. It'll ruin my reputation.”
