Draco stayed behind after Potions class.
Professor Snape was organizing his notes.
Draco said,
“Professor, your lessons are actually very impressive.”
Snape looked up.
“Are you feeling unwell?”
Draco frowned.
“No. I was giving you a compliment.”
Snape returned to his notes.
“Then I suggest you practice.”
Draco tried again.
“Your handwriting is remarkably neat.”
Snape stopped writing.
“Malfoy.”
“Yes, Professor?”
“If you continue complimenting me, I will assume you want something.”
Draco smiled.
“I do have a small request.”
Snape sighed.
“Of course you do.”
Draco placed a piece of parchment on the desk.
“Could you possibly reconsider my latest grade?”
Snape glanced at the parchment.
“No.”
Draco blinked.
“You didn't even look at it.”
“I didn't need to.”
Draco frowned.
“What if I give you another compliment?”
Snape slowly looked up.
“Then I may deduct another point for wasting my time.”
Draco sighed.
“Fine. I'll be honest.”
“An unfamiliar strategy.”
“I need the better grade because my father expects excellence.”
Snape raised an eyebrow.
“Your father expects you to earn it.”
Draco looked at the parchment.
“So the compliments didn't work?”
Snape returned to his notes.
“They were almost convincing.”
Draco smiled.
“I'll take that as progress.”
Snape sighed.
“That is precisely why I never compliment students.”
