She noticed me looking at her hands during coffee.
She smiled.
“Why do you keep looking at my hands?”
I said,
“I’m trying to figure something out.”
She laughed.
“What?”
“Whether that ring means I should behave.”
She looked at her hand.
“And what have you decided?”
I took a sip of coffee.
“I’m still collecting evidence.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“You’re terrible at subtle flirting.”
I smiled.
“I’m actually being very subtle.”
She leaned closer.
“Then explain what you've figured out so far.”
I looked at her hand again.
“You wear that ring often.”
“That’s your big discovery?”
“No. My big discovery is that you keep checking whether I'm still looking.”
She paused.
“Maybe I'm curious.”
“About the ring?”
She smiled.
“About what you're thinking.”
I put my coffee down.
“That sounds like a dangerous question.”
“Why?”
“Because if I answer honestly, this coffee might turn into a much longer conversation.”
She glanced at the clock.
“Good. I wasn't in a hurry anyway.”
I smiled.
“So the ring isn't the only thing I should be paying attention to.”
She picked up her coffee.
“Now you're finally catching on.”
