She looked at me and said,
“You're dangerously charming.”
I smiled.
“That's a compliment.”
“Not necessarily.”
“Why not?”
“Because charming men usually know they're charming.”
I nodded.
“Fair point.”
She narrowed her eyes.
“So what do you do with all that confidence?”
I leaned back.
“Mostly get myself into trouble.”
She laughed.
“At least you're honest.”
I smiled.
“You haven't heard the dishonest answer yet.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“And what would that be?”
I said,
“That I'm completely innocent.”
She laughed.
“You're not even trying to convince me.”
“I figured honesty would save time.”
“So you admit you're trouble?”
“Only around people who encourage me.”
She smiled.
“And who exactly encourages you?”
I looked at her.
“You.”
She shook her head.
“I haven't done anything.”
“You've been smiling this whole time.”
She tried to hide her smile.
“That's not evidence.”
“It's circumstantial.”
“And your defense?”
“I plead charming.”
She laughed.
“That isn't a defense.”
“Then I'll need a better strategy.”
She leaned closer.
“Maybe you should stop trying to be charming.”
I smiled.
“Would you still be interested?”
She paused.
“That's exactly why you're dangerous.”
I laughed.
“And yet you're still sitting here.”
She picked up her glass.
“Maybe I like a little trouble.”
