She looked at me and said,
“You have a lot of confidence.”
I smiled.
“Is that a compliment?”
She nodded.
“Definitely. It's attractive.”
I leaned back and said,
“Good. I was hoping you'd notice.”
She laughed.
“Where does all that confidence come from?”
I looked at her and replied,
“Mostly from the way you keep looking at me when you think I'm not noticing.”
She immediately looked away.
“I wasn't looking at you.”
I smiled.
“Of course not.”
She narrowed her eyes.
“Don't get too confident.”
I said,
“I'm trying, but you're making it difficult.”
She laughed and asked,
“So you think I like your confidence?”
I nodded.
“I think you like what happens when I use it on you.”
She paused.
“That sounded dangerously smooth.”
I replied,
“I've been practicing.”
She smiled.
“On who?”
I looked directly at her.
“Honestly? Just you.”
She shook her head, trying not to smile.
“You're impossible.”
I said,
“And yet you're still sitting here.”
She glanced at me and whispered,
“Maybe that's the part I'm not trying to explain.”
For once, my confidence didn't need a comeback.
