She looked at me and said,
“If you could read my mind for ten seconds, what would you look for?”
I smiled and said,
“Probably the thought you're trying hardest to hide.”
She laughed.
“And what makes you think I'm hiding anything?”
I leaned closer and replied,
“Because you've been smiling at me for five minutes without saying anything.”
She looked away and said,
“Maybe I just like your company.”
I said,
“Maybe.”
She looked back at me.
“That's all you're going to say?”
I nodded.
“I don't want to ruin a perfectly good mystery.”
She smiled again.
“You're enjoying this, aren't you?”
I replied,
“More than I probably should.”
She took a sip of her coffee and asked,
“So, what do you think I'm thinking right now?”
I paused dramatically.
“I think you're wondering whether I'm brave enough to say what I'm thinking.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“And are you?”
I smiled.
“I'm trying to be.”
She leaned slightly closer and whispered,
“Good. Because I was getting tired of doing all the flirting.”
I nearly forgot how reading minds was supposed to work.
